Procedure at a 4 way stop
-
If you are the only vehicle approaching the stop street, stop and make sure that there is no oncoming traffic before you proceed.
-
If there is another vehicle already at the stop street, it has the right of way.
-
If you stop at the same time as another vehicle, common courtesy applies and either vehicle may proceed first.
-
Always ensure that your vehicle comes to a complete stop before you proceed.
Procedure at a traffic light
-
If the light is green, you may proceed. It is always advisable to slow down at a green light and check for approaching traffic.
-
If you are turning right and the light is green, the approaching traffic has right of way. Wait for the approaching traffic to pass before you proceed.
-
If you are turning left and the light is green, you may proceed.
-
If the traffic light turns amber, slow down and stop.
Identifying arrows at a traffic light
-
A flashing green arrow indicates you may turn in the direction indicated.
-
A flashing red arrow on your left indicates that you may turn if no other traffic is approaching.
-
A steady red or green arrow indicates that you may proceed with caution.
-
When traffic lights are out of order, please treat the intersection as a four way stop.
Approaching a traffic circle
-
Always yield at a traffic circle.
-
Vehicles already in the traffic circle and those vehicles entering the circle on your right have the right of way.

Note that all vehicles already in the circle have right of way.

WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY:
In order to feel relaxed and safe during your visit to South Africa, we have compiled an easy step by step guide for you to follow in the event of an emergency.
Step 1
-
Contact Europcar immediately on the toll free number.
-
Take note of the street in which you are parked or any noticeable landmarks that will make it easier for us to locate your vehicle. We have branches in all major centres.
Step 2
Please have the following information available:
-
The registration number of the vehicle (this can also be found on the keyring).
-
Is the vehicle driveable?
-
Are the wheels punctured or the rims damaged?
-
The exact location of the vehicle. (Street name, highway name, landmarks etc)
-
The colour, make and type of vehicle.
-
Your contact telephone number.
|
-
If you are unable to obtain help, try to stop a passing vehicle. Ask the driver to contact us as soon as possible.
-
Make sure they have our telephone number and your name and location. Most drivers carry mobile phones and will be pleased to assist.
|
Step 3
-
Relax, stay calm and let us worry about the rest. You can now have peace of mind that a Europcar representative is on the way to you.
-
We will ensure that you are on your way speedily, whether this means bringing you another vehicle or repairing the one you have on rent.
-
Europcar is located in all major towns, cities and airports so you can rest assured that we will not be far from you at all times.
Europcar Emergency telephone numbers can also be found:
-
In the Traveller’s Companion.
-
On the licence disc holder on the windscreen.
Rest assured that we will do everything possible to ensure that you have a safe, comfortable and trouble free journey whilst driving a Europcar vehicle.
If it is not convenient to return your vehicle to a Europcar depot, you may make arrangements with a Europcar representative to have the vehicle collected.
